Charity Focus – East Anglian Air Ambulance
Virgin Money London Marathon 2017
Those of you who know me will appreciate that I have a real passion for running. Whatever the weather I will go out and run approximately 8 miles each lunchtime, rain, wind and occasionally sunshine….Throughout the years of competitive running with long and lonely training runs, I often see the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) flying overhead and thought what a fantastic job they are doing. Going to the aid of some individual(s) in need of emergency treatment is priceless. I discovered that the EAAA don’t receive any direct government funding so choosing them as my charity made it an easy choice.
The response time to get to a person in a life-threatening situation is paramount. For me, to support a service that enhances the odds of life and recovery by getting the patient to the right hospital quickly and safely makes it an easy decision. The EAAA crew comprises of specialist pre-hospital doctors and critical-care paramedics, operating out of two high-tech helicopters from 07:00 until 19:00 from the Norwich base and from 07:00 until 01:30 from the Cambridge base.
After turning 50 last year, I completed my first ever marathon. In all honesty, it wasn’t the most pleasant experience as I had been struggling with injuries beforehand. At the end I said it would be my first and last! Well, six months on, I am here again, but this time I have the added incentive of running for a great charity and I will (hopefully) be better prepared for the whole event ahead.
Well, the effort I will put in isn’t anywhere close to the effort/service provided by EAAA. Since their launch in 2000, they have attended over 16,000 lifesaving missions, touching the lives of many thousands of people. One day, god forbid, one of my family, friends, colleagues or associates may be in need of the Air Ambulance Service. I would like to think that I have helped in some way to keep this fantastic service up in the air and helping lives in my area.
I will be regularly posting updates of my training as I build up to the run next year so please visit my JustGiving page or the Cirrus website for updates. Any words of encouragement is always welcome!
